Understanding Nervous System Regulation
Ed emphasizes that many of our daily challenges—be it stress, anxiety, sleep disturbances, or lack of focus—are intricately linked to the state of our nervous system.
By learning to regulate this system, we can transition from a constant 'fight or flight' mode to a more balanced state, promoting longevity and vitality.
Breathwork Techniques Shared by Ed
1. The Physiological Sigh
A simple yet effective method to quickly alleviate stress:
Take two short inhales through the nose.
Follow with a long, extended exhale through the mouth.
This technique, also known as cyclic sighing, has been shown to reduce anxiety and improve mood when practiced for just five minutes daily .
2. Beginner's Breath Awareness
For those new to breathwork, Ed recommends:
Inhale for 5 seconds.
Exhale for 5 seconds.
Continue this pattern for 2 minutes daily.
This practice helps in becoming aware of one's breathing patterns, laying the foundation for more advanced techniques.
3. Balancing Energy Levels
To shift into a productive yet calm state:
Short, sharp inhales can activate the sympathetic nervous system, boosting alertness.
Extended exhales engage the parasympathetic system, promoting relaxation.
By adjusting the ratio of inhales to exhales, one can modulate energy levels to suit the task at hand.
